2 Union Square

The parking garage that used to occupy this site has been demolished and excavation has begun. This giant augur was one of several used to drill into the sides of the excavation, holes that were eventually filled with concrete and steel, which would act as 'roots' to keep the building from falling over. The building in the immediate background is 1 Union Square.
